Led Zeppelin have unveiled plans to release, Live E.P., to celebrate 50 years of their classic album, Physical Graffiti.
The forthcoming release will arrive on September 12th. Additionally, on the same date, Led Zepellin will share an updated 50th anniversary edition of 2015’s Physical Graffiti deluxe edition triple-LP vinyl set featuring the companion audio disc and a new bonus replica Physical Graffiti promotional poster.
Physical Graffiti, the group’s sixth album, was initially released to huge fanfare in February 1975. It has since gone 17x Platinum, making it one of the best-selling rock records of all time.
The upcoming EP features live recordings of ‘In My Time Of Dying’ and ‘Trampled Under Foot’ from their iconic show at Earl’s Court in 1975, as well as ‘Sick Again’ and ‘Kashmir’ from their performance at Knebworth in 1979. All four live recordings previously appeared on the Led Zeppelin DVD in 2003, but have never before been available on vinyl or digitally.
The press release quotes Robert Plant as saying of Physical Graffiti: “It goes from one extreme to the other but at the same time, it’s very evident that it’s Zeppelin… I love the album and it does work as a double album. There are some real humdinger, roaring tracks.”
Meanwhile, Page says of the LP: “We had enough material for one-and-a-half LPs, so I figured, ‘Let’s put out a double and use some of the material we’d done previously but never released’. I always thought the sequencing of an album was really important and that was part of my role as the producer.”
In a retrospective review of the album, Far Out wrote: “For all of the bloat that turns up on most double albums, Physical Graffiti is still a fairly tight listening experience, always having more surprises on every other track. The sequencing behind the record is perfect, with the band not dwelling on the epic side of the record for too long before transitioning into tight rock jams like ‘In the Light’ or softer numbers like ‘Down by the Seaside’.”
The live recording of ‘Trampled Under Foot’ at Earl’s Court in 2005 is out now.
