John Lennon’s suit fetches eye-watering sum at LA auction

At a recent auction in Los Angeles, a DA Millings & Son custom suit worn by John Lennon in 1963 was sold for a staggering $102,480. Other high-selling items included the possessions of Elvis Presley and George Harrison.

The piece was sold at an inaugural music memorabilia auction held by Goldin, a leading sports and pop culture memorabilia auction house.

“We realised that we get so many music items and we build them into our pop culture sales, we just want to separate it and make its own event out of it,” Goldin’s Head of revenue, Dave Amerman, told The Times.

The suit was in their possession, as many Beatles items belong to music promoter Chris Agajanian, who has worked on building his collection for over four decades. Agajanian owns over 2,000 pieces of Beatles memorabilia and signed letters of provenance for many of the items in the Goldin sale.

The sum for the suit may be high, but Goldin has easily topped that in the past. In 2020, Goldin sold a copy of Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Double Fantasy. Lennon had signed the copy for his assassin, Mark David Chapman, just before he was shot and killed in 1980. It fetched a sum of $900,000.

During the auction, Goldin sold several more high-ticket pieces of interest. An Elvis Presley Omega wristwatch, gifted by Johnny Cash, also sold for $103,700.

A signed copy of Led Zeppelin’s album Presence sold for $19,520, and George Harrison’s sunglasses sold for $47,590.

In other John Lennon news, Sam Mendes will deliver four Beatles biopics to be released simultaneously in April 2028. The Beatles BootCamp consists of Paul Mescal, who plays Paul McCartney; Joseph Quinn, who portrays George Harrison; Barry Keogan, who plays Ringo Starr; and Harris Dickinson, who has been cast to play John Lennon. Starr has been involved in early iterations of the script, acting as an advisor on plot lines and dialogue.
