Director Rob Reiner has discussed the famous faces, including Paul McCartney and Elton John, who will be making cameo appearances in the upcoming movie Spinal Tap II.
Reiner, who writes, directs, and stars in the comedy sequel about a heavy metal band reuniting for one final performance, teased the potential appearances of the rock giants when he was asked in a recent interview with AARP Movies for Grownups what the significance of the follow-up to the 1984 original film would be.
He responded: “It basically says: ‘No matter how old you are, if you can still do it and still enjoy doing it, then do it’. I asked Paul McCartney about this. I said, ‘There’s you, Mick Jagger, Elton John, and you still like to perform. What is it about you guys? Is it that you just love the music? And you love performing?’”
According to the filmmaker, McCartney replied: “Yeah, and the drugs,” referencing a line in the upcoming film.
Spinal Tap II, the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 1980s hit This is Spinal Tap, features all the original cast of Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Reiner as the members of the fictional band, which latterly became to be heralded as a pioneer of the mockumentary genre.
However, Reiner’s hints at the cameos come just days after one of the film’s original stars, David Kaff, who played the character of keyboardist Viv Savage, sadly passed away at the age of 79 on July 11th.
News of his death was shared by his band Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom, who wrote in tribute: “Our brother David Kaffinetti passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday. We are devastated by this event. David always had a kind word and a quick wit that would slay you where you stand. Then he’d make you smile doing it!”
Spinal Tap II will be released in cinemas on September 12th.
